Surfing and the body

Paddle, pop up, stay balanced

In surfing you spend a long time paddling, with shoulders and back in extension, then in an instant you pop up on the board and rely on balance, rotation and your legs. On top of that you need breath control and calm, in an environment that never stops changing.

The practice is built around your level, your body and the time you spend in the water.

What we work on

A practice built around the wave

  • Shoulders and backMobility and endurance for paddling, with less tension in the neck and lower back. Strengthening the muscles of the spine and the core, and opening the chest.
  • Hip and ankle mobilityTo pop up smoothly, move through manoeuvres and stay stable on every wave.
  • Balance and coreStability and control to stay on the board and rotate the trunk freely, without losing stability in the lower body.
  • BreathBreath awareness and control, to manage effort, learn to recover between one wave and the next, and stay calm in the water.
  • RecoveryRestorative practices to recover after long sessions.

The three pillars

Breath, body, mind

Breath

Pranayama to deepen breath awareness and find calm, in and out of the water.

Body

Mobility, alignment and myofascial work for more efficient movement with less compensation.

Mind

Concentration and presence to read the wave and stay clear-headed.

How we work

Built into your preparation

The programme is built around the athlete and coordinated with their strength and conditioning coaches, in line with the season's goals. Sessions take place at your home or your club's facility, one-to-one or in small groups of up to four people.

We recommend practising consistently for at least three months to feel the benefits.
